EIC (Energy Identification Code) is a unique energy code used in electronic data exchange on the electricity and gas markets. The EIC code identifies market participants and objects from the gas infrastructure including balancing zones, withdraw facilities, facilities for natural gas storage, LNG facilities, important points of the gas transmission system etc.
The EIC code can be of local or international significance.
A legal entity having an EIC code with an international significance may use the code on every natural gas market in Europe. It serves as a unique identification for the entire EU, and the market participant is recognizable to all other participants. EIC codes are used in electronic data exchange between market participants for capacity nominations and transmission, schedules, approvals, quantity allocation by users, reports to regulatory authorities etc.
